A group of British exchange students will be visiting your town, and your English Department has commissioned a report on the local retail environment. Write a report for your Head of Department. In your report you should:

 

  • describe the variety of shops and services available
  • comment on pricing and accessibility
  • suggest improvements that would enhance the shopping experience

 

Write your report between 140 and 190 words, with a formal or semi‑formal tone.



Scoring Guide

  • 9–10 – Excellent, near-C1 level in that criterion
  • 7–8 – Strong B2 performance, shows above-average skill
  • 6 – Meets B2 pass standard
  • 4–5 – Borderline B1/B2; some weaknesses
  • 0–3 – Below B2 level

You must answer this question. Write your answer in 220–260 words in an appropriate style.

 

Writing Task:

You have attended a seminar about public services and your tutor has asked you to write an essay on local medical services in your town. You have made the notes below:

Local medical services:

  • accessibility
  • quality of care
  • funding

Some opinions expressed in the discussion:

  • “Many people still struggle to get a doctor’s appointment when they need one.”
  • “Local hospitals offer excellent treatment, but waiting times are too long.”
  • “Public medical services are underfunded and cannot keep up with demand.”

 

Write an essay discussing two of the points in your notes.

You should explain which point is more important, giving reasons to support your opinion.

You may, if you wish, make use of the opinions expressed in the discussion, but you should use your own words as far as possible.
